Bi-Colour Linen Top - Style 1190
Back in September this year, The Fabric Store launched an
exclusive linen range with many gorgeous colours. I immediately ordered two fabric lengths in
Honeysuckle and Olives colours. They would brighten up my Asian, warm undertone complexion. My
first thoughts were to make an olives pants and a pink dress with them.
However, things changed since I picked up the 1190 Style pattern in a charity
shop in Gungahlin. This is an easy made pattern created from just only 4 pieces
with kimono sleeves. Tops with kimono sleeves is always my favourite as it
gives a good balance to my wide shoulders.
I looked at the pattern and thought I should combine the two
linen colours into this garment. The olive pieces would be for front and back
neck bodices, whereas the honeysuckle pink would be perfect for the body.
I applied the French seam technique for all the part. It
gave a very neat look and I would love to use it more for next garments. The
tricky part for me was inserting bias tapes to the neckline and sleeves. I made
couple bias tapes using the pink linen and some leftover liberty fabric from
the blouse…. I was happy with the finished look at all as some stitches went
out of their ways at the neckline and the same with the sleeves. I wore the
tope once to the Saturday music lesson. I was very pleased with the general
look, the combination of the two colours; However somethings was still not
quite yet. Finally, yes I decided to take off everything from the necklines and
sleeves. I reinserted new olive bias tapes (found from an ops shop) around the
necklines and the two sleeves. Now this is the final look (hopefully). I am
wearing this to our Christmas lunch tomorrow.
The process of making this garment is such a great learning
journey for me. I implemented the new sewing technique – French seam. I
overcome my laziness /ignorance for re-making something. Yes I always convinced
myself that somethings I made was good enough and this was no need to do it
again. However, this time I actually redid the whole neckline and sleeves over
and over until it finished. Very happy with the outcome and of course my
effort.
Goodbye for now,
Thao
